Parallel Parking 101
Since moving into our new 2nd story perch overlooking the main drag of the Shops at West End we’ve noticed a surprisingly high number of people have trouble when it comes to the art of parallel parking. Being the creative problem solvers that we are, we recognized the opportunity to do some good and help out the guests of our neighboring retailers. In an attempt to help rectify this travesty, we’ve put together a quick tutorial on how to situate your sedan with savvy.
First, what not to do… (click to play video)
And now, how to park like a pro…
STEP 1: ALIGN
Align yourself parallel to the car that will be in front of you. 18−24” away is a good distance.
STEP 2: ANGLE
Turn your wheels to the right and swing the front of your car out as the back goes into the spot.
STEP 3: CRANK IT
Once the front right corner of your car is by the bumper of the other car, turn the wheel the other direction making sure you are clear of their bumper and your back wheels aren’t yet at the curb.
STEP 4: STRAIGHTEN
Proceeding into the spot, your car should straighten out. Make small adjustments as needed to become
in line with the other cars and the curb.
NOTE: Try not to make contact with the other cars… they are not your feelers.
STEP 5: ADJUST
Finally, pull forward to center yourself in your spot.
P.S. Special thanks and apologies to our exemplar of poor parallel parking. No joking, when we sat down to catch someone on video it took less than 10 minutes for someone to come along and unknowingly demonstrate.
